Clone a tool

Cloning creates an independent copy of a tool — with every nested tool, lookup, import, script, lookup cache, and custom API it uses — in the integration and environment you choose. Use it to make a variant of a shared tool without touching the original, or to copy a tool between environments or accounts. This article shows integrator.io users and administrators how to clone a tool, what a clone contains, and what happens to tools when you clone a flow, integration, or AI agent that references them.

What a clone contains

A clone is a full copy of the tool's tree: the tool, its nested tools, and all lookups, imports, scripts, lookup caches, and custom APIs any of them reference. Each resource is copied once, even if several steps share it, and the copies reference each other.

Connections aren't copied. During the clone you choose a connection for each one the tree uses, and the same choice applies everywhere that connection appears. To create a new connection, see Create a connection.

Clone a tool

  1. Go to AI studio, and then select Tools.
  2. In the tool's row, select Actions > Clone tool. The Clone tool page opens.
  3. Change the Name (the default is the original name prefixed with Clone - ) and enter a Description.
  4. If your account has more than one environment, select the Environment. See Multi-environment management.
  5. Select the Integration the clone belongs to.
  6. Review the list of components that will be copied, and then select Clone tool.
  7. On the setup page, configure each connection — Use existing connection is the default — and then select Done.

The destination integration's Tools tab opens, with the clone listed.

Where you can clone to

Destination Supported
The same environment Yes
Another environment in the same account Yes, with access to both environments
Another account Yes, with access to both accounts

A tool is cloned as a new tool at the destination; it isn't linked to the original. To update a copy that was promoted earlier instead of creating a new one, use Promote tools with ILM.

Tools inside flows, integrations, and AI agents

When you clone a flow, an integration, or an AI agent that references tools, the tools come with it automatically: each tool is copied once, references between the copies are re-linked, and you choose connections in the same dialog. The same applies when you download and upload a flow or integration — see Download and upload a tool.
